CALL FOR PAPERS and POSTERS
THE THOMPSON SYMPOSIUM FOR MASTER'S DEGREE STUDENTS:  RESEARCH IN PRACTICE
May 2, 2009
The Pennsylvania State University
University Park, PA
Details and registration: http://www.music.psu.edu/musiced/thompson/index.html.
The Thompson Symposium is intended to provide a forum for master's degree students to share their completed and in-progress research with graduate students and faculty. The keynote speaker will be Dr. James Nolan, the Hermanowicz Professor of Education at Penn State and recent Co-Coordinator of the Elementary Professional Development School (PDS) Partnership with the State College Area School District.  Dr. Nolan will be presenting with two music teacher inquirers who participated in the PDS Partnership. The symposium is named in honor of Keith P. Thompson, a faculty member at Penn State since1974 and retired in May 2003.

The symposium features a keynote speaker with follow-up small- and large-group discussion; a poster session for research in-progress as well as research by faculty, doctoral students, undergraduate students, and current teachers; and small-group question and answer sessions for in-depth discussion on completed master's project. A modest fee is required of participants for continental breakfast and lunch.

Call for Papers (master's student work) and Posters (all researchers):
Guidelines for paper submissions (master's work):
Students who are currently enrolled in a master's degree program or have completed a master's degree within the last three years are invited to submit projects from their master's work that reflect systematic inquiry about a topic in music education.  Submissions may be in the form of a completed paper, or a summary/abstract of a research project (1-3 pages), and should emphasize the transfer of the conclusions to the practice of music education, especially to the classroom or rehearsal setting.  Projects in-progress at the time of submission will be considered with an accompanying letter from the project advisor indicating completion timeline. Research representing quantitative, qualitative, historical, or philosophical methodologies is welcomed, as are literature reviews and meta-analyses. Projects not selected will automatically be considered for the poster session.

Electronic submission
An electronic submission should be an email with the subject heading "Thompson Symposium Submission" and content indicating 1) the author's name, institutional affiliation, address, phone number, and preferred email address, 2) Title of the project and indicate if the project is in-progress or complete, and 3) The name and email address of the advisor of the project.  The document should be sent in Microsoft Word as an attachment.  The author's name should not appear on the project submission itself.

Guidelines for poster submissions:
Any persons (undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degree students, faculty, teachers) who have completed research or research in-progress related to music education are invited to submit an abstract to be reviewed for the poster session.  Procedures for submission should be followed as outlined above, with the exception that the abstract should be approximately one page in length.

Submission deadline: All submissions must be postmarked (electronically or hard-copy) by March 4, 2009 to be considered. Notification concerning the submission will be sent via email by April 1, 2009.  Registration deadline is April 10, 2009.

All research project submissions and registration are to be sent to:
