A music teacher friend of mine sent me the following excerpt from an e-mail she received from her union:

7.Facebook and MySpace. Under the advice of PSEA attorneys, all PSEA members are urged not to have a Facebook or MySpace account. The maintaining of these accounts has led to numerous acts of litigation against our members by Districts across the state. Also, individual citizens can easily lodge a complaint with PDE, based upon what they view on one of these accounts, leading to a formal investigation by PDE. So, please be cognizant of this advice.

Here's what I found on the PSEA website (http://www.psea.org/general.aspx?id=828):

When used appropriately, social networking sites can be a valuable, powerful tool for professional development, sharing of resources, and social interaction. It's ok to use MySpace and Facebook to connect with friends, family and colleagues. PSEA encourages members who choose to use social networking sites to be careful and thoughtful about the information you share, and with whom you share it. To help, we’ve provided a few simple tips to encourage social networking safety.

What are your thoughts and experiences regarding educators (and future educators) and social networking?  Any tips you'd care to share?  Any resources you'd like to recommend?
