Books Have Shifted - Find It Now!

Have you ever given any thought to what it would be like to re-arrange an entire library? That’s exactly the endeavor that the staff at Bishop Library undertook this summer. The project, dubbed “The Great Shift of 2013,” was designed to create space on shelves where the collection has been rapidly growing as well as to decrease empty shelf space where it was unnecessary. This will allow the Library to have ample space to grow its collection to suit the needs of the students and faculty.

After weeks of measurement and calculation, the staff was ready to move the books.  Assembly lines were used to load books onto carts and push them between floors. The majority of Bishop Library’s 225,000 books now have a new home at the completion of this project. Here are a few highlights of the major changes: The PR (english literature) section of the STACKS is now located on the Main Floor. The entire Q section (Science) is now located on the Ground Floor.

The new locations of the books in STACKS are as follows:

When you are in the library look for signs like the image above to help you locate materials or see the Library Floor Plans by visiting:  http://www.lvc.edu/library/floor-plans.aspx

We've also added "FIND IT" signs on the shelves which spotlight different subject areas in our STACKS collection as well as color-coded call# ranges for the various collections in the library.

Finally, check out a few pictures of the shift as it was taking place:
