Database of the Month: PsycINFO

PsycINFO from the American Psychological Association (APA) is a comprehensive, authoritative database for scholarly literature in the field of psychology and related disciplines. PsycINFO is one of over forty databases available through the EBSCOhost platform.

It is the largest resource of its kind devoted to peer-reviewed literature in behavioral science and mental health. PsycINFO has over 3 million records and summaries of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations. Coverage goes back to the 1800's and includes international material.

Contained within PsycINFO is the content from PsycARTICLES, a smaller full-text database of over 150,000 articles. You do have the ability to search PsycARTICLES directly, but it is best to choose PsycINFO for a more comprehensive search.

PsycINFO includes a helpful tool called Searchable Cited References. In the list of search results, many articles will display Cited References and Times Cited in this Database links. When you click the Cited References link, you will see the list of references (bibliography) for the article. When you click the Times Cited in this Database link, you will see a list of references that cite the original article.

Also, on the toolbar of the PsycINFO search screen, you have the option to search Cited References by entering in search terms in one or more of the search fields:  Cited Author, Cited Title, Cited Source, Cited Year, or All Citation Fields.

To access PsycINFO, go to the library's website at www.lvc.edu/library and click on Articles & Databases. PsycINFO is listed under the subject area of Social Sciences.
