Bishop Library has launched a new discovery service called Summon. Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest, created the Summon service to improve the discoverability of the digital resources that are now available from libraries as well as the open web.
Summon provides a user-friendly Google-like search to a single unified index containing resources from a majority of the proprietary full-text databases and journals accessible from the Bishop Library web page as well as the books and media contained in the library catalog.
Since Summon does NOT index content from every library database, a list of resources not currently included in Summon is available in the Summon LibGuide at http://libguides.lvc.edu/summon.
The Summon index also includes millions of public domain volumes present on the web and other open access resources. Over two million public domain volumes contained in the HathiTrust, a partnership-based digital library, are accessible in the Summon service.
In customer service terms, this means a library user can perform one search from the simple library-branded search box on the Bishop Library web page to gather relevant information from many of the databases and journals as well as the library catalog.
You can experience the power of Summon by using the new search box on the Library's web page that is titled: Search All or you can access Summon directly at http://lvc.summon.serialssolutions.com.
Summon’s unique indexing provides a quicker search compared to competing discovery tools from other vendors. Although Summon does generate a large retrieval set, the service allows users to refine searches by content type, subject terms, publication date, library location, language, and format.
Icons and descriptors are present within each citation to help a user quickly identify if the item is a book or journal article and if the item is available online or located in Bishop Library. Summon also recommends specific databases or specialized collections that may be relevant to the search terms.
Summon was recognized as the Best Enterprise Search Solution at the 2011 CODiE Awards presented by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). Now in its twenty-sixth year, the CODiE Awards are the only peer-reviewed awards program in the software and information industry.
Over 400 libraries, including 30% of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) offer the Summon service to their clients. The “Journal Finder” and Link Resolver products utilized by Bishop Library are also Serials Solutions products.
Please contact any of the librarians, if you have questions about Summon.
